Obituary

Andrijana "Ina" Kereta passed away peacefully surrounded by her family March 4, 2018 in San Clemente, California at the home of her daughter Lucy Kereta-Block at the age of 89. Ina, as she was affectionately called, was born March 12, 1928 in Split, Croatia to her parents Lucija and Karmen Stambuk. Her family consisted of her older brother Uros, sister Borka and younger, surviving brother Berigoj. Life was good yet when World War II arrived the tides were to change dramatically. In 1943 Ina, Berigoj and her father, Karmen left the country they loved and escaped to a refugee camp in the Egyptian desert. Ina, at a tender age of 15 became a teacher to the young children who now called this their home for almost three years. Her mother and sister remained behind in Split and her eldest brother, Uros was fighting in the war. In 1945 they returned to Yugoslavia and lived there for another five years. After tolerating a new regime that took everything her father and mother worked so hard to achieve, Ina and her family decided to leave the country in 1950. Ina and her family settled in San Pedro, California in 1950 to find a new beginning. In 1953 she married Vojmir Kereta and they remained together until he passed away in 2014. Ina was a loving, devoted wife and wonderful mother to two children, Joseph Kereta and Lucy Kereta-Block. Ina's life centered around her children and family so much so that in 1993, after the birth of her granddaughter Kristina Block, Ina and Vojmir settled in Fallbrook, California to live near their daughter and son-in-law, Walter. There she developed a passion for knitting and started a small business selling her beautiful creations to local boutiques. Cooking was also passion of Ina's and anyone who had the pleasure to be invited to her home can attest to the delicious meals she prepared. She also developed a green thumb and tended to her vegetable and herb garden at her lovely home alongside her fragrant pink roses. Ina practiced Catholicism and attended mass regularly. She was also a huge Lakers fan making sure she didn't miss a game! Ina traveled all over the world with her loving family and experienced a fulfilling life. Ina is survived by her son Joseph, daughter Lucy, son-in-law Walter, granddaughter Kristina, her brother Berigoj, and sister-in-law Masha. Her brother, Uros and sister Borka predeceased her. She is also survived by numerous beloved nieces and nephews. A Rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m. followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday April 7, 2018 at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in San Pedro, CA. Interment will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made under Andrijana Kereta to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital http://giftfunds.stjude.org/andrijanakereta Please sign the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com.
