John Steve Ostoich, beloved father, husband, and friend of San Pedro went to be with his Lord at age 72 on Tuesday, November 21 at Little Company of Mary hospital in Torrance surrounded by his loved ones. John was born on June 15, 1945 at St. Mary’s in Long Beach to Clara and Anthony Ostoich. He was known to many as “Johnny O” and was a gregarious man, a living legend who was larger than life itself. John grew up in San Pedro where he was an active community member his entire life. He worked as a mechanic, longshoreman, and linesman where he was able to remain close to the ocean, which he would fondly refer to as his mistress. No one who met Johnny O could forget his infectious passion for his leisurely activities: hanging out at Royal Palms, boating, fishing, flying airplanes, skiing, dancing, longwinded chats, and spending time with his loved ones and friends. John is survived by his wife, Deena Ostoich; a brother, Anthony Ostoich; sons, John S. Ostoich Jr., Joey Ostoich, and Jerry Hatfield; daughters, Haley Brown and Malory Brown; and granddaughter, Layla Morris. Family, friends, and others whose lives John touched will be invited to pay their respect and celebrate John’s life at McNerney’s Mortuary in San Pedro on Friday, December 8th at 11:00 am. Flower donations can be made through www.McNerneysMortuary.com.
