Katy Mountain passed away peacefully on July 20, 2017. As an educator for several decades and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, she touched innumerable lives. Born Kathryn Therese D'Amore in 1928 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she attended Mount Saint Mary College, graduating in 1950, receiving her teaching credential shortly after. By 1954 she had moved west and was teaching in San Diego where in 1955 she would meet Jim, the love of her life. A marriage that was one week shy of 60 years on the day she died, saw them move to Culver City and then San Pedro in 1961, where they put down permanent roots and raised their four children. As a cancer survivor, she was an active member in the San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild benefitting the USC Norris Cancer Center. She was also an avid bridge player, book club member, and, mostly in deference to our father, wine enthusiast! She was a woman who loved people and cherished not only her family, but the literally hundreds of friends made over a lifetime that she now leaves behind. Katy's legacy will be one of service to others, commitment to educating our young, and love for every soul she encountered during her 88 year journey through life. She is survived by husband James; brother Paul D'Amore; children (spouses) Kathy Zabala (Paul), Bill Mountain (Kathy), Ann Harder (Mike), and Lynn Oravetz (John); and grandchildren Courtney Zabala, Zachary Zabala, Garrett Zabala, Michael Harder, Allyson Harder, Mia Oravetz, and Matthew Oravetz. Visitation will be Friday July 28 from 7 - 9 PM, at McNerney's Mortuary 570 W. 5th St., San Pedro, CA. A Visitation and Rosary will be held at Holy Trinity Church, 1280 W. Santa Cruz, San Pedro at 9:15 am on Saturday July 29, followed by Mass at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild, the Holy Trinity School Fund, or the Harbor Area Boys and Girls Club Scholarship Fund.
