Maria grew up in Caltagirone and in 1967, at the age of 34, she embarked on a summer trip to visit her Uncle Joe in America. Joe lived in Burbank and worked for Universal Studios in the film industry. Joe’s tailor happened to be Maria’s future brother-in-law who introduced her to the love of her life, John. John and Maria fell in love and were married on July 29, 1967. Shortly thereafter, they purchased the family home on 18th Street in San Pedro and on November 17, 1969, they welcomed the greatest joy in life, their only child, Mercedes. Maria enjoyed being in her kitchen creating delicious meals for her family. Her family’s favorite dishes included her cannelloni, homemade ravioli, gnocchi and cotolette to name a few. She took great pride in keeping an immaculate home, enjoyed gardening and also baking traditional Italian cookies. She was known for her signature ‘Deliciosos’ and her Roccoco and Mostacoli cookies at Christmas. Maria enjoyed spending time with her friends. She had a flair for fashion and always dressed to impress. Maria was a devoted Catholic and enjoyed attending various Patron Saint festivities at Mary Star of the Sea Church. Padre Pio was an integral part of Maria’s life. Funeral Mass will be held at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in San Pedro on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. with interment at Green Hills Memorial Park. Vigil Service will be on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at McNerney’s Mortuary with visitation from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and Rosary at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in Maria’s Memory. Maria’s graceful legacy of unconditional love for Christian, Mercedes and her beloved husband John will live in our hearts forever.
