Obituary

Victor Manuel Diaz (né: Silverio Osorio) of Stanton, CA died Thursday, April 5, 2018. He was 95.
He leaves his wife of 71 years, Rosa Diaz, his four daughters Marie Hoesman (Tom), Vikki Russo (Jack), Aminta Dolores Davis, Rosa Lee Johansen (Allen), his nine grandchildren, and his eleven great-grandchildren. His daughter Ines Chaustre precedes him in death.
Victor was Born in Salazar de Las Palmas, Colombia in 1922. The son of Victor Delgado and Aminta Osorio and the brother of Maria Concepcion, Encarnacion, and Teresa Blanca, he grew up in the cities of Cúcuta and El Carmen. He left Colombia in 1942 and became a United States Merchant Marine in 1944. He worked on the SS Lurline and Matson Lines and later on the SS Catalina. His experiences working in construction, carpentry, oil, and shipping taught him the value of hard work; Victor was constantly working with his hands. A stickler for details, he was always instructing his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren how to perform tasks both efficiently and precisely. In 1946 he met Rosa Cook in Baltimore, Maryland, and they later wed in Morristown, Tennessee. Early in their marriage, they lived in Newport News, VA, and San Francisco, CA. They eventually settled in Los Angeles in the Wilmington neighborhood where they raised their four daughters. Following his stint as a seaman, Victor worked as a longshoreman in the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in November of 1953. An accomplished traveler and mariner, ships and the sea captivated him until the end of his life.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, April 12 from 5-7pm with a funeral service on Friday, April 13 at 11 am at McNerney’s Mortuary in San Pedro, CA. Interment will take place at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. Memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Boys Town and Smile Train.
