Hazel St. Claire Butler, 33, of San Pedro, passed away early April 23rd, 2018, in San Pedro, following a courageous battle with Brain Cancer. Born in San Pedro, Hazel graduated from San Pedro High where she was a member of the Academic Decathlon Team and entertainment editor of the School newspaper. She went on to earn a degree in Astronomy from the University of Hawaii at Hilo, where she was a member of the Model United Nations and worked at the Visitors Center for the telescopes on Mauna Kea, leading tours to the summit. Returning to California she attended Cal State University Long Beach graduating with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. She volunteered her time at the California Science Center working as a docent in the Endeveror Exhibit. At the time of her death, she was employed as a safety engineer with Cal/OSHA, inspecting workplaces for hazards. Hazel is survived by her parents, Allene and Tom Butler, of San Pedro, grandmother Claire Haizlip and uncle Bill Haizlip of Canandaigua, NY, uncle Richard Haizlip of Corona, and cousins JoAnn Green (Terry Green) of Santa Monica, William Goodman (Vicki) of Redmond, Oregon, Kirby Haizmann of Albany, NY and Virginia Haizlip (Rick Melrose) of Reston, Virginia. A memorial service/celebration of life is scheduled for Tuesday, May 1st, 11 am at McNerney’s Mortuary, 570 W. 5th Street, in San Pedro.
