Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Nikola Galesic, a long time resident of San Pedro, passed away Wednesday August 22nd, after a battle with cancer at 80 years of age. Born February 22, 1938 in the small Croatian village of Rastane to parents Marko and Yurka, Nikola was the seventh of eight children including brothers, Joso and Mile, and sisters Mara, Tereza, Anjelka, and Simica. After completing his education in Zadar, Nikola met and married Cvjetka Pavlakovic who would become his wife for the next 57 years and together moved to Zagreb where their two daughters, Melita and Ksenija, were born. Only four years later in 1965, the young family immigrated to San Pedro and had sons Mark and Nick while at the same time forming Nick’s Painting company which he would own and operate for over 50 years. Always passionate about giving back, Nikola joined the Knights of Columbus in 1969 reaching the Fourth and highest Degree as Sir Knight. He was also passionate about the growing Croatian community in San Pedro and was President of the Croatian Catholic Union and Treasurer of the Croatian American Club for many years. Later Nikola helped found and was President of the Croatian Catholic Family Guild of Mary Star and is also credited with bringing the first Croatian language Mass to San Pedro in 1970. He is survived and sorely missed by his wife Cvjetka, and his four children, Melita Martinez, Ksenija and husband Gus Halamandaris, Mark Galesic, Nick and wife Kim Galesic along with grandchildren Alessandra McKay and Paloma Martinez, Nikolas and Alethia Halamandaris, Brook, Nathan, Tristan, Emma, and Aiden Galesic. The Rosary Service will be at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church Friday August 31st at 8:15 pm, Funeral Mass honoring Nikola’s life will also be held at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church Saturday September 1st at 9:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, the Galesic family requests donations be made to a Catholic charity of your choice or offering of a Mass. Please sign the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com.
